Therapeutic Stories
Our therapeutic stories have been written by Di over her extensive career and are designed to help children explore complex topics through the art of storytelling.
This helps children on many levels.
- For example, quietly listening to an absorbing story can help a child simply relax and recalibrate. On another level listening to an experience of a character in a story enables a child to gain many positive messages without directly focusing on themselves until they are ready to do so.
- Sharing stories can be a wonderful way of building attachment and recognising differing perspectives.
- Storytelling teaches children the value of stories and guides the child to develop skills in expressing themselves, reflecting on their own experiences and communicating those to others.
- Di’s stories are an opportunity to learn about human emotions, problem-solving, how we cope with trauma, and the importance of nurturing ourselves to build resilience and independence.
- Di’s stories are cleverly crafted and written to incorporate other therapeutic and well-being mediums, such as breathwork, yoga and creative arts.
In reading a therapeutic story, there is a benefit to the adult; this isn’t just for the child. Allowing room for connection, implicit messaging, strategies, room for reflection, structures and processes that go between the words.
Therapeutic arts are beyond the written word. The weave between the words and may not live on a page; they may live in the objects and toys through which children enact their stories.
The Ladybird Project in Schools
The ladybird project (based on a book by Michael Chissick called Ladybird’s Remarkable Relaxation) is a 26-week programme of class-based activities taking 20-30 mins a week with additional activities that can be undertaken led by the class teacher. The ladybird project teaches mindfulness and emotional expression to enable children to navigate the day-to-day challenges of life. It teaches them the art of relaxation and enables them to recognise that many children are going through struggles that are quite different from their own.
All children (and adults!) can benefit from the Ladybird project as it helps us learn how to manage our emotions. It also helps with things like concentration, regulation, self-awareness, enhanced communication and problem-solving strategies.
